What to write in a message to a baby you have not met yet
July 11, 2026 · 4 min read
You want to write something for the baby. Then the cursor blinks, and suddenly every word feels either too small or too much. It happens to everyone. The good news is that the notes families treasure most are almost never the polished ones.
Start with a feeling, not a sentence
Do not reach for something profound. Reach for what is actually true right now. Excited, nervous, already completely in love. Name the feeling and the words tend to follow on their own.
Prompts to get you unstuck
If the blank page wins, borrow one of these openers. Finish the sentence and you are done.
The thing I most want you to know is. The world you are arriving into is. When I first heard you were coming, I. I hope you grow up to be. One day I will tell you about.
Keep it short and true
A single honest line beats a paragraph you laboured over. Baby is not grading you. A few real words are exactly the kind of thing that hits hard in fifteen years.
It is allowed to be silly
Not every note needs to be a tearjerker. Warn them about their dad’s cooking. Promise to teach them the good card games. Humour ages just as well as sentiment, sometimes better.
A few examples
“We have never met and I already rearranged my whole heart for you.” “Your mum is going to be so good at this. I cannot wait for you to see it.” “Welcome. It is loud and strange and wonderful here, and we saved you a seat.”
Save it somewhere it will last
The trouble with a note in a group chat is that it scrolls away. With bebe, every message from every person is kept together and revealed on the big day, so the whole collection becomes a keepsake your child can actually read one day.
