When to have a baby shower, and how to time it right

July 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Timing a baby shower is a small decision that shapes how relaxed the whole thing feels. Too early and it can seem premature, too late and you are cutting it fine. Here is how to find the window that works for the parents and the guests.

The traditional sweet spot

Most baby showers happen in the third trimester, usually somewhere between weeks 28 and 34. By then the bump is unmistakable, the pregnancy feels real to everyone, and there is still a comfortable buffer before the due date. It is the classic choice for good reason.

Why not to leave it too late

Cutting it close to the due date is risky. A quick check of a pregnancy countdown can help you see how much runway is left. Babies keep their own schedules, and the last few weeks can bring fatigue or bed rest. Leaving two to three weeks of margin means a surprise early arrival will not clash with the celebration.

When earlier makes sense

Sometimes earlier is wiser. A high-risk pregnancy, a lot of travelling guests, or an adoption timeline can all be reasons to bring things forward. Some families also prefer a post-birth gathering, often called a sip and see, once the baby has arrived.

Timing the invitations and the registry

Whatever date you choose, send invitations four to six weeks ahead and have the registry ready before they go out. Guests appreciate the runway to plan and shop, and it keeps the lead-up calm rather than last minute.

Building in the virtual guests

If some of your people are joining from afar, pick a time that is friendly across time zones and share it in each person’s local time. A single link that works on any device means distant guests are not an afterthought but part of the plan from the start.

Start the fun before the day itself

The shower is one afternoon, but the excitement can run for weeks. Setting up a bebe game when the invitations go out gives everyone something to do in the run-up, guessing and leaving notes, so the celebration builds naturally and carries all the way to the reveal.
